In our Bible study this morning, the girls and I were reading a book discussing the full humanity and full deity of Jesus. It interested me that the author suggested that first century Christians often greeting one another with the phrase ‘He is risen!’.
I thought about that and read about the church of the 1st century:
Acts 2:42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
I wonder if that phrase “He is risen” could set the tone for their relationship. Rather than a weak “how are you” and “I’m just fine”, if we proclaimed the greatest mystery of the universe in our greeting of one another if it would change how we view our time together and how we treat one another. “He is risen’ says God is with us. It says I know Him. It says "HE IS RISEN!"
